Chapter Fifteen

They reached the round tower and climbed the winding stairway to the top. Alainn gasped aloud as they entered the uppermost room. There were a dozen large candles scattered about the large, nearly empty room. A fire blazed in the long hearth, making the room lovely and warm. Flames cast a romantic glow against the stone walls and floor. A bedsheet covered the window, preventing the wind from blowing out the candles. And, in the center of the room, there lay a large bed covered in plush bedclothes and large plump pillows.

Alainn walked toward the bed and touched it. It was a feather bed. “I’ve only ever slept on a straw bed in the corner of Morag’s room. This is so grand, Killian. How did you manage it?”

“I’ve my ways, and I’ve been planning it for a time, since the first night we were together and I felt ashamed to have bedded you upon the ground. You should be bedded properly, as the lady you are.”

“ ’Tis truly lovely.” She felt tears brimming in her eyes, again.

“Enough tears, Lainna McCreary, or you’ll make me think twice about doing things I thought would please you.”

“I am well pleased, Killian. And I shall be forever grateful.” She touched her hand to the combs in her hair. There was an underlying finality in her voice, as though she believed this might be the last time they would be together in this way.

He closed the distance and wrapped his arms around her as if he’d never let go. She buried her face in his chest and he kissed the top of her head. “I’ve brought wine,” he murmured. He moved from her to present her a jug of wine and two goblets. Her sensuous lips curved upwards with pleasure as he poured her glass. She lifted the sweet liquid to her lips, then, quickly pulled it away.

“ ’Tis mead wine, Killian! Sweet honey wine! Is it not ill luck to drink it when we are not wed? ’Tis not our wedding night.” His face wore a look of yearning. “And, you’ve no need to increase your virility. I think fertility is not something we should be hoping for!”

“ ’Tis only superstitious nonsense not to be considered truth.”

“Like fairies and witches, and the like,” she quipped.

He nodded his head and took her glass from her, dumping the contents of both goblets out the window. “I’ve brought whiskey, as well,” he added and retrieved another jug.
